The AFSL Fireworks Regulatory Compliance Team is on the road again, this week in Indiana. Steve Jones, Indiana State Fire Marshal, invited the AFSL team to meet with his team to discuss fireworks enforcement and to learn how to identify legal consumer fireworks from those illegal explosives disguised as consumer fireworks that are being sold across the country. We were also happy to see representatives from ATF.
These meetings allow us to share what we know about the illegal fireworks being sold to America’s consumers and to teach the AHJ’s how to safely dissect suspect fireworks devices to identify the pyrotechnic content to determine if the product is compliant with federal regulations.

Our work with the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) has allowed us to share our message with Fire Marshals across the country and alert them to the problem many of them have in their states. Through our efforts, we are helping these AHJs find consumer fireworks containing illegal amounts of explosive materials, like the Reloadable Aerial Shells found to have a total pyrotechnic composition of 1,000 grams, well over the 60-gram limit. The device also had 336 grains of flash powder versus the 2 grain limit. These devices are extremely dangerous and don’t belong in the hands of a consumer.
AFSL and its members are committed to providing the safest consumer fireworks available in the US market.
